A Special Cinema Outing for Children in Lagos
On July 14, several children from underserved communities in Lagos will have the rare opportunity to enjoy a day at the movies. This special cinema outing, centered around the release of Toy Story 5, is taking place at Filmhouse Cinemas in Circle Mall. The event is organized by Filmhouse Group in collaboration with The Special Foundation, aiming to provide children who may not otherwise have access to a cinema experience with the chance to watch a film on the big screen and engage in a shared storytelling session.
The event carries the theme “Every Kid Has A Toy In Their Story,” emphasizing the importance of film and storytelling in fostering creativity, imagination, and social inclusion. For many of the invited children, this will be their first visit to a cinema, making it a memorable and transformative experience.
The Legacy of Toy Story
Toy Story, which first premiered in 1995, has become one of the world’s most recognized animated film franchises. Its themes of friendship, courage, and resilience have resonated with audiences across generations. The fifth installment of the series is being distributed in Nigeria by FilmOne Entertainment, ensuring that local audiences can also enjoy the latest chapter in this beloved story.
Kene Okwuosa, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Filmhouse Group, spoke about the initiative’s purpose ahead of the event. He emphasized that the program aims to give children access to experiences that can broaden their horizons.
“For many of these children, this will be their first time stepping into a cinema and experiencing the magic of storytelling on the big screen. This initiative is about creating access, sparking imagination, and giving every child the chance to see themselves reflected in stories that inspire hope, joy, and possibility. Above all, it’s about reminding them that their stories matter,” he said.
Empowering Children Through Collaboration
Seyi Akinwale, founder of The Special Foundation, described the collaboration as part of the organization’s broader mission to support children through educational and developmental opportunities.
“This collaboration reflects the kind of partnership that creates real value for children, combining access, exposure, and inspiration in a way that broadens their horizons. Having reached over 62,000 children through our programs, we see this experience as part of a larger mission of giving children the joy of discovery, career exposure, and the confidence to imagine bigger futures,” Akinwale stated.
The partnership between Filmhouse Group and The Special Foundation is designed to ensure that the initiative reaches children from communities with limited access to recreational and cultural experiences. It also creates an environment where these children can share in the excitement of cinema alongside their peers.
A Unique Experience for Young Audiences
By bringing together children from different backgrounds, the event fosters a sense of community and shared experience. It provides an opportunity for them to engage with a film in a setting that is both immersive and inclusive. The event also highlights the power of storytelling in shaping young minds and encouraging them to dream beyond their current circumstances.
For many of the participants, this day at the cinema will be more than just a fun activity—it will be a moment of inspiration and empowerment. The event serves as a reminder that every child has a story worth telling and that through access to culture and education, they can be given the tools to shape their future.
