Andy Serkis Stands by Diversity Gap in New Lord of the Rings Film Amid Backlash

Andy Serkis Addresses Casting Choices for New Lord of the Rings Film

Andy Serkis, known for his iconic portrayal of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, has addressed concerns about the casting choices for his new film, The Hunt for Gollum. The actor and director emphasized that the movie will not engage in “politically correct casting-for-the-sake-of-casting” and will instead stay true to the source material.

Serkis, 62, is returning to the role of Gollum for the upcoming film, which he also directs. He described the movie as “sitting absolutely between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies.” Filming is currently underway in New Zealand, with a release date set for December 17, 2027.

So far, the cast includes white actors such as Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Jamie Dornan (who replaces Viggo Mortensen as Strider/Aragorn), Anya Taylor-Joy, Elijah Wood, and Sir Ian McKellan. This all-white lineup has sparked some debate, especially considering the current climate around diversity in Hollywood.

Serkis explained that the decision was influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, which was heavily inspired by Norse mythology. He said, “The Shire feels very, very much like a very, very white, you know… They’re not very concerned about what goes on beyond the borders of The Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in.”

He acknowledged that there have been criticisms regarding the lack of diversity in the cast. However, Serkis stated that the film is “somewhat acknowledging that” without resorting to “politically correct just-casting-for-the-sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes.”

A Deep Dive into Gollum’s Past

The Hunt for Gollum is based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, which include lesser-known stories and historical details. According to producer Peter Jackson, the film will explore Gollum’s childhood and how he became the creature he is. It will also follow the Rangers as they track him down, eventually leading to his capture and imprisonment in Mordor.

Winslet plays Marigol, while Taylor-Joy is rumored to be cast as an elf. Woodall portrays Halvard, a new character not present in Tolkien’s original books. The film will also delve into Gandalf’s quest to uncover the origins of the One Ring, which Bilbo Baggins possesses.

Technological Innovations

Serkis confirmed that AI will be used in The Hunt for Gollum to de-age certain characters. This technology has previously been used in other projects, and Serkis has spoken about the experience of being one of the few white actors in Black Panther alongside Martin Freeman. He shared how this gave him a new perspective on what it feels like to be the minority on a film set.

Future Projects

The film will be followed by another Lord of the Rings project titled Shadow of the Past, written by Stephen Colbert, a former US chat show host and self-proclaimed Tolkien enthusiast. This development highlights the continued interest in expanding the Lord of the Rings universe.

Diverse Casts in Other Adaptations

In contrast to The Hunt for Gollum, Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power features a diverse cast, including Sir Lenny Henry and Sara Zwangobani, who play Harfoot characters. Ismael Cruz Córdova, who portrays Arondir, became the first person of color to play an elf in the franchise. However, the series faced backlash over racism directed at its Black actors, prompting a public statement from the production team.
