Digging for Glory: Will Tom Cruise Finally Win His First Oscar?

A New Chapter in Tom Cruise’s Career

The first trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s highly anticipated new film, Digger, has been released, offering audiences a glimpse into one of the most transformative roles Tom Cruise has ever undertaken. This role is so different from his previous performances that it may be difficult to recognize him at first. In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world.” His character is grey-haired, balding, potbellied, and speaks with a thick southern accent. The film’s logline suggests that Rockwell’s company may have triggered a trillion-dollar ecological disaster, and he embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

Interestingly, the trailer also shows Cruise spending a lot of time tending to a sickly cat, adding an unexpected element to the story.

A Satirical Tone and Strong Supporting Cast

From the look of the trailer and its satirical tone, Digger seems to have a Dr. Strangelove-like feel. The film includes John Goodman as the ailing U.S. president, who appears trigger-happy when it comes to launching missiles and often dozes off at inopportune moments. The inspiration for the film remains unclear, but the combination of humor and serious themes makes it an intriguing project.

The supporting cast includes Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Sandra Hüller, all of whom bring their own unique flair to the film.

A Collaboration Between Two Powerhouses

Digger is co-written and directed by Iñárritu, known for directing films such as Babel, 21 Grams, and the Oscar-winning movies Birdman and The Revenant. This marks Iñárritu’s first English-language movie since The Revenant and is set to be one of the fall’s most talked-about films. It is also expected to kick off a major Oscar campaign for Cruise.

Tom Cruise’s Oscar Journey

Tom Cruise, now 64 years old, has been nominated four times for an Academy Award — as an actor for 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July, 1996’s Jerry Maguire, and 1999’s Magnolia, and as a producer for 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. Despite these nominations, he has never won a competitive Oscar. However, last year, he was awarded an Honorary Oscar, presented by none other than Iñárritu, who said at the time: “This may be his first Oscar, but from what I have seen and experienced, this will not be the last.”

A Unique Challenge for Cruise

Considering the Academy’s love for physically transformative performances and the use of distracting prosthetics (such as Nicole Kidman’s fake nose in The Hours or Gary Oldman’s transformation as Churchill in Darkest Hour), there is a strong possibility that Oscar voters could be won over by Cruise’s performance in Digger.

Ahead of the trailer’s launch, Cruise spoke to press and fans at an event hosted by Warner Bros in Los Angeles. He described Digger as unlike any project he had worked on before. “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither had Alejandro when we went in, ever,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “When you see this film, it’s totally original.”

Release Date and Expectations

Digger is scheduled to open in theaters on 2 October 2026. With its unique blend of satire, drama, and high-profile talent, the film is already generating significant buzz and anticipation among fans and critics alike.
